Unlike in many previous centuries, at the end of the 19th century, gemstones were hardly considered to have magical or healing powers. Instead, precious stones, like flowers, were given symbolic meanings, resulting in a whole language of gemstones. For example, the following was said about rubies and pearls: "Rubies are particularly suitable for young lovers [...] In general, it is considered the symbol of the most passionate and ardent love, while the pearl is considered the symbol of purity of soul." (As described in Bazar. Illustrirte Damen-Zeitung, November 1886). The present brooch combines these two jewels into one design in the formal language of late Victorian and Edwardian England. The horizontal brooch consists of delicate leafy tendrils that unite in the center to form a romantic heart shape. Three red rubies and numerous natural pearls adorn the surface. The gemstones are set in 15-karat gold, a typically British alloy that was only used until 1932. Despite its age, this piece of jewellery is wonderfully preserved.
