ow available at auction from Second Vintage This classic 1960s Seiko Sportsmatic 5 pairs an exceptionally clean silver sunburst dial with the signature recessed 4 o'clock crown. Produced in 1964, it remains a highly attractive example of mid-century Japanese design, powered by the reliable 21-jewel automatic caliber 6619A. Brand: Seiko Model: Sportsmatic 5 Reference Number: 6619-8970 Serial Number: 4D00688 Movement: Automatic Dial: Silver sunburst with applied gold-tone indices Case Size: 37 mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Gold-plated, stainless steel caseback Production Year: 1964 Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: +26+30s/day, running strong and steady. Dial and Hands The silver sunburst dial is exceptionally clean, presenting a remarkably well-preserved and attractive face. Its applied gold-tone indices remain bright and well-preserved, complementing the crisp and fully intact printed text. The day and date window frames are similarly clean. The original gold-tone dauphine hands show light, age-appropriate patina, with minor oxidation and spotting visible under magnification. Case and Crystal The gold-plated case displays honest wear, featuring an integrated gold-tone bezel that shows light scratches consistent with the top of the case. While the upper surfaces retain their classic geometry, there is notable degradation on the hidden underside, with significant plating loss and green corrosion visible on the back of the case and lugs. The stainless steel caseback exterior is relatively clean, showing some surface scratches. The recessed crown is positioned at 4 o'clock. A domed acrylic crystal protects the dial and remains clear, with no major scratches, cracks, or crazing visible. Movement Inside is the Seiko caliber 6619A, a 21-jewel automatic movement. The plates appear generally clean with no severe corrosion or damage visible, while the rotor shows some minor surface marks. The movement is properly engraved with the Seiko name, jewel count, and caliber designation. The timegrapher records +26+30s/day. Performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. Strap The watch is fitted with a standard black leather strap featuring a crocodile pattern. It is in good wearable condition, showing light wear and creasing, and is secured by an unsigned gold-tone buckle. Condition Good vintage condition. The watch presents beautifully on the wrist due to its remarkably well-preserved dial, clear crystal, and bright indices. The case exhibits visible scratches and handling marks throughout its gold-tone finish, along with significant plating loss and green corrosion specifically located on the underside of the case and lugs. The hands display minor spotting under magnification. The timegrapher results confirm the movement is performing well within expected vintage tolerances; running strong and steady. Dimensions The case measures 37 mm (excluding the crown). Remarks This Sportsmatic 5 stands out for its exceptionally clean silver sunburst dial and bright applied indices. It offers a classic 1960s Seiko aesthetic, complete with the distinctive recessed crown, making it a highly wearable and attractive vintage timepiece. History The Seiko caliber 6619A was introduced in 1964, coinciding with the Tokyo Olympic summer games. This 21-jewel movement beats at 18,000 vibrations per hour and utilizes Seiko's proprietary Diashock shock protection. It features the brand's highly efficient bidirectional "Magic Lever" self-winding system, a robust design that automatically winds the mainspring through the motion of the wearer's wrist, as the movement cannot be manually wound via the crown. The Sportsmatic 5 line helped establish the accessible, reliable, and stylish automatic watch template that would define Seiko's global success for decades.
