Seiko - Crown Special - No reserve price - 702990 - Men - 1964

ow available at auction from Second Vintage A sought-after model among collectors, this high-end vintage Seiko Crown Special pairs a pristine silver sunburst dial with a beautifully finished 23-jewel manual-winding movement. Positioned historically as a premium offering from Suwa Seikosha, this 1964 example delivers exceptional mid-century Japanese design and robust mechanical performance. Brand: Seiko Model: Crown Special Reference Number: 702990 Serial Number: 4301943 Movement: Manual-winding Caliber 341 Dial: Silver sunburst with applied gold-tone indices Case Size: 36mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: 14K Gold Filled case, stainless steel caseback Production Year: 1964 Condition: Good vintage condition. Timegrapher: +12+15s/day, performing remarkably well. Dial and Hands The dial is pristine and highly attractive, featuring a silver sunburst finish that remains exceptionally clean and well-preserved. Applied gold-tone indices are bright and free of heavy oxidation, catching the light beautifully. The printed text, including "SEIKO CROWN", "Special", and "DIASHOCK 23 JEWELS", is crisp and fully intact. The gold-tone dauphine hands display a light, age-appropriate patina, with light surface oxidation and minor spotting visible under magnification, notably remaining free of severe corrosion or bending. Case and Crystal The 14K gold-filled case retains its honest vintage wear and preserved overall geometry. It shows moderate scratches and handling marks throughout, alongside some softening of the lug edges consistent with its age and use. A thin gold-tone bezel frames the dial, displaying light scratches consistent with the rest of the case. The watch is fitted with a signed crown bearing the Seiko 'S' logo; its knurling shows moderate wear but remains defined. The stainless steel caseback exhibits light scratches, yet the engravings remain fully legible. A domed acrylic crystal protects the dial, remaining clear with only minor superficial scratches and no deep cracks or chips. Movement Powering this watch is the manual-winding Seikosha Caliber 341, a 23-jewel movement operating at 18,000 beats per hour. Visually, the movement is in excellent condition, presenting very cleanly with bright plates and bridges. There is no visible corrosion or heavy scratching, and the screw heads appear in good condition. The bridges feature crisp engravings reading "CROWN SPECIAL", "SEIKOSHA", "23 JEWELS", and "341". On the timegrapher, it measures +12+15s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. Strap The watch is paired with a black leather strap featuring contrast stitching. It shows light wear and creasing, serving as a handsome complement to the gold-filled case. Condition Good vintage condition. The pristine dial is the standout feature, showing excellent preservation, while the hands exhibit light oxidation and spotting under magnification. The gold-filled case displays moderate scratches, handling marks, and softened lug edges consistent with honest use, and the acrylic crystal shows only minor superficial scratches. The manual-winding movement is remarkably clean and running exceptionally well, supported by the strong timegrapher results. Dimensions Case Size: 36mm (excluding the crown) Remarks This Crown Special stands out for its exceptionally clean silver sunburst dial and the robust performance of its Seikosha Caliber 341 movement. The combination of its elegant dauphine hands, signed 'S' crown, and well-preserved caseback engravings make it a highly desirable acquisition for enthusiasts of vintage Japanese watchmaking. History Introduced in 1961 by Suwa Seikosha, the Crown Special was positioned as a more accessible premium alternative to the expensive Grand Seiko. As a higher-end evolution of the standard Seiko Crown, the Crown Special strongly reflects the design philosophy of the early Grand Seiko models. Equipped with a highly finished 23-jewel movement, the line represents a significant era in Seiko's mid-century push toward chronometer-level precision and refined aesthetics, cementing its status as a collector favourite today.
