Italianate School of the 17th Century • Title: Mater Dolorosa (Virgin of Sorrows in Prayer and Contemplation) • School / Attribution: Italian School (Naples/Rome region). Circle or direct follower of master Francesco Solimena (1657–1747). • Chronology: late 17th century–first half of the 18th century (c. 1690–1740). • Technique: Oil on canvas. • Dimensions: 92 x 71 cm (Private devotion / urban gallery format). • Condition: The canvas presents a noble antique patina. Genuine craquelure typical of its age is evident along with small historic losses of pictorial layer consolidated (especially visible at the central fold of the blue cloak), which do not compromise the overall reading of the work. 2. Stylistic Analysis and Expert Attribution We are examining an unquestionably academically crafted piece that embodies the transition from the late Baroque to the Italian 18th-century Classicism. The work stands out for a bold light palette and restrained theatricality. The pyramidal composition places the Virgin in a three-quarter view, directing her imploring gaze toward the upper left corner, a Baroque rhetorical device conceived to connect human sorrow with divine will. The modeling of the face shows the formal refinement of the Neapolitan circle of Francesco Solimena. The drapery folds, executed with energetic yet fluid brushstrokes, combine the use of a deep ultramarine with the pinkish and salmon tones of the tunic, a chromatic play highly valued in the workshops of southern Italy during the 18th century. The anatomical treatment of the interlaced hands reinforces the school’s naturalism, while the dramatic use of chiaroscuro highlights the tears glistening on the cheeks, aiming at the viewer’s emotional empathy (pathos). 3. Market Parallels (Market Parallelisms) To contextualize this work’s value in international old master auctions, the following pieces of identical iconography, school, and format are identified: • Workshop / Circle of Francesco Solimena: The Virgin Mary as Our Lady of Sorrows, oil on canvas (comparable dimensions), successfully auctioned in Central European art circuits (e.g., Auctionet / Stockholms Auktionsverk, old master painting lot), confirming the high interest in Marian iconography from his workshop. • Northern Italian School / Guido Reni’s influence (18th century): Medium-format works (approx. 90 x 70 cm) cataloged as Sorrows in prayer, commercially traded on platforms such as Pamono and Chairish with stable estimates within late Baroque devotional painting. • Models of the Masters of the Seicento and Settecento: This painting type draws directly from the prototypes created by Carlo Dolci in Florence and Francesco Solimena in Naples, whose workshop variants move fluidly in European Old Masters catalogs. 4. Reference Bibliography for the Catalog For proper academic support of the entry, the following texts on 18th-century Italian painting are recommended: 1. Bologna, Ferdinando. Francesco Solimena. Naples: L’Arte Tipografica, 1958. (Key text for understanding the evolution of Neapolitan painting in the 18th century and the production of its followers). 2. Pallucchini, Rodolfo. La pittura veneziana del Settecento. Venice-Rome: Istituto per la Collaborazione Culturale, 1960. (Useful for analyzing the expansion of color and Marian currents in 18th-century Italian painting). 3. Spinosa, Nicola. Pittura napolitana del Settecento: dal Barocco al Rococò. Naples: Electa, 1988. (Definitive guide to the devotional workshops of southern Italy). From a private collection Note: “To ensure the safety and perfect condition of the work, depending on its volume and nature, transportation and delivery may be performed by the seller.”
