All auctions / Furniture, Design & Mirrors / Secrétaire - Cherry wood - Secretary desk, circa 1740, bombé.

Description For sale is an exceptional and original Baroque secretary/secretary desk from circa 1740. The piece features a heavily bombe case, a large writing flap, and a particularly elaborately designed interior. The surface is finished with a very beautiful, warm and richly figured veneer, presumably cherry wood or fine fruitwood, complemented by decorative banding. The light, honey- to reddish-brown color gives the furniture an especially elegant appearance. Of particular interest is the sophisticated interior. Behind the writing flap lie numerous small drawers and compartments as well as several concealed secret compartments. Two of them are especially unusual and disguised as books. Additionally, in front there is a sliding panel, behind/under which lies another hidden compartment. Overall, the secretary offers an exceptionally large number of drawers, open compartments and secret compartments, in addition to the three large drawers in the lower section. It is precisely this elaborate construction that makes the piece a particularly interesting and rare example of high-end furniture art from the 18th century. The associated keys are present, and the locks or locking mechanisms are functional. The back also clearly shows the great age and the historic construction of the furniture. Old wood joints, the massive build, and the aged surface underscore the authentic character of this almost 300-year-old item. The secretary has been professionally restored in the past and is today in a good, ready-to-use condition. Minor age-related signs of wear, veneer irregularities, discolorations, and traces of earlier restorations may be present and are part of the history of a piece of furniture this age. Dimensions: Width at the widest point: approximately 108 cm Height: approximately 106 cm Depth at the deepest point: approximately 53 cm An exceptional Baroque secretary from around 1740 with a bombe shape, fine veneer, functioning locks, and a rare interior with several hidden compartments. A prestigious collector’s and connoisseur’s piece with strong historic character. No Returns and No Warranty.
