Scuola Sabauda (XVII) - Ritratto di Vittorio Amedeo I

Scuola Sabauda (XVII) - Ritratto di Vittorio Amedeo I

Refined male portrait in Baroque style - Oil on metal plate. A collectible piece of great interest and rarity. This European school portrait is executed in oil directly on a heavy antique metal plate (dark oxidized tin/iron or copper alloy), elegantly affixed inside its original or period linear metal frame. The painting presents a refined three-quarter view of a courtly gentleman, strongly inspired by the famous seventeenth-century iconography of King Charles I of England or the high Flemish nobility. He is depicted with the classic pointed mustache and goatee, with a prominent finely pleated white ruff collar, accented by a striking ceremonial cerulean blue sash. The back of the lot reveals the authentic historical metal surface, dark and unclean, with natural oxidation and signs of time, constituting an exceptional visual guarantee of its age and material integrity. Technical specifications and condition details: Technique: Oil on metal plate (strongly oxidized tin/iron or copper alloy). Style: Baroque / Seventeenth-century court portraiture. Painting dimensions: 9.4 cm x 6.6 cm. Condition report: The front paint layer shows an intense and attractive craquelure due to age with slight signs of old professional retouching. The reverse is perfectly intact, featuring a deep natural dark patina and superficial scratches consistent with its history. The metal structure remains stable and solid. The sphere of Sabaudian court painters (Jean Claret or circle of Giovanna Garzoni). Following the iconographic trail of the Duchy of Savoy, the style recalls the portraits active at the Turin court in the mid-seventeenth century, such as Jean Claret (who immortalized Charles Emmanuel II and Piedmontese nobility with very similar physiognomies) or the milieu of court miniaturists. The painting is a highly refined rendition of that world, probably executed by a master specialized in dynastic settings. Stylistic analysis and artistic context: From a formal standpoint, this exquisite painting on metal demonstrates deep mastery of seventeenth-century European portraiture. The psychological intensity of the gaze, the precise rendering of the pleated collar, and the dark, evocative background faithfully reflect the court models established by the legendary master Anthony van Dyck and his Northern European followers. Locally, the work aligns perfectly with the visual language used by the Sabaudian court portraitists, such as Jean Claret and his circle, who documented Piedmontese aristocracy. Executed as a high-quality historical reproduction on a metal plate, the anonymous master painter successfully captures the regal elegance and prestige of the Baroque Golden Age, creating an object of great refinement for discerning collectors. The lot will be adequately packaged and shipped with partner couriers and online tracking. For this lot, shipments outside the European Community are not made.
