Scuola italiana (XIX)

Italian painter of the 19th century, by Giuseppe Costantini (1843–1893) “Young Players (Genre Scene)” Oil on canvas Second half of the 19th century Signed bottom right (signature not very legible) Copy after Giuseppe Costantini Measurements: 54 x 40 cm in a period frame Canvas: 40.5 x 25 cm The painting depicts a lively episode of popular life set indoors in a rustic interior, following a compositional model that can be traced to Costantini’s genre painting. A group of youths is gathered around an older man engaged in an impromptu musical performance: at the center dominates the large percussion instrument, while on the right a young man supports two large plates; the figures are arranged according to a deliberately theatrical and narrative construction. The impoverished environment, almost in shadow, is described through a few but effective domestic and work elements. The attention given to clothes, objects, poses and especially to the characterization of the figures returns that anecdotal, popular and intimately realistic taste characteristic of Costantini’s production. His painting is indeed documented for representing Neapolitan daily life, with children and elders placed in modest interiors and meticulously described. Condition report: In good conservation condition with signs of time and wear attributable to the period (see photos) relined *** Note on photographs Some of the photographs accompanying this entry were produced professionally using controlled artificial lighting, with the use of a studio spotlight, to ensure better readability of the work and to allow a more precise observation of the painting surface, figurative details and chroma. Note on the frame The work is accompanied by a carved and gilded wooden frame, of a classical taste, with continuous decoration in vegetal motifs. The frame shows normal signs of time, small wear, abrasions and slight losses of gilding, consistent with age and use. The frame is provided with the work as a courteous supplement and does not constitute an essential part of the sale. Any imperfections, losses or damages to the frame, including those arising from transport, cannot be grounds for dispute or compensation regarding the work. - Certificate of lawful provenance and Expertise - Insured shipment and electronic invoicing
