SC-158. South Carolina. February 8, 1779. $90. PMG Extremely Fine 40. No. 9472. Boldly signed by John Smyth, John Scott, and Theodore Gaillard (Jr.) at right below the guarantee text. Printed by Thomas Coram with a vignette of a warrior seen at left accompanied by a ribbon with Latin phrase, "ARMISA CONCURRITE CAMPO" which translates to "Assemble the Field of Arms." Back vignette of Hercules strangling the Nemean Lion. In all, $1,000,000 in Bills of Credit were authorized by the February 8, 1779 ordinance with the original denominations set to be $40, $60, $80, and $100 while the $50, $70, and $90 denominations were later added. Here bidders have for their consideration a fully margined note with nary a problem to be mentioned. The most recent example we sold was an example graded About Uncirculated 53 that realized $4,320 (Lot 97236) amidst a significantly weaker 2025 market. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.
