Large antique brass Samovar with elaborate engraving and silver-plated FRAGET serving tray (Warsaw, 1860–1896) Large antique coal-fired Samovar made of brass, richly decorated with extensive floral and ornamental engravings on the body, lid, neck, and base. On the samovar there are traces of older Cyrillic/Russian inscriptions and marks that can be seen. Due to the extensive engraving, parts of these original inscriptions are only partially readable. For this reason the samovar is not attributed to a specific manufacturer. The elaborate engraving of the samovar could have been added or further developed at a later point in its history. This cannot be stated with certainty. The samovar has its traditional construction with a central fire tube, decorative side handles, a lid, and a tap. The tap mechanism is movable. The samovar has not been tested with water or in operation; therefore no guarantee of watertightness or functionality is given. Also included in the lot is a large silver-plated serving tray with clearly visible manufacturer and material marks on the back. After inspection by the Catawiki expert, the manufacturer’s mark on the back of the tray was identified as “FRAGET W WARSZAWIE.” According to the expert, this specific oval maker’s stamp dates the tray to the period between 1860 and 1896. The expert also identified the mark “GALW” on the tray as an abbreviation for “Galwanizacja” (galvanization/electroplating). It indicates that the base metal of the tray (brass/copper) was heavily silver-plated via electroplating. The mark on the tray also shown as “N” inside a diamond/oval is interpreted by the expert as indicating the normal thickness of the silvering applied to the base metal. With a weight of approximately 8.20 kg the samovar is exceptionally heavy and conveys a very solid, substantial construction. The high weight emphasizes the substantial nature of the construction and the robust workmanship of the metal used. Coupled with its imposing height of about 60 cm and the intricate ornamental design, the samovar has a particularly impressive and representative appearance. The samovar and the tray are in good, age-appropriate condition. The surfaces show patina, oxidation, discoloration, scratches, and other age- and wear-related traces. The back of the tray also shows visible signs of use and scratches. Please examine all photos carefully, as they form an essential part of the description and show in detail the condition, engravings, construction, and the marks on the back of the tray. Dimensions and weight of the samovar: Height: approx. 60 cm Width: approx. 40 cm Depth: approx. 30 cm Weight: approx. 8.20 kg The height of approx. 60 cm has been measured. The width and depth figures are estimated from the available photographs and may differ slightly from the actual measurements. Included in the delivery: samovar with accompanying parts and large silver-plated FRAGET serving tray.
