Salins France - Asparagus server (13) - Majolica - No reserve

Exquisite Antique full Size French White Majolica Asparagus Service (13 Pieces) - Salins-les-Bains "Inaltérable" c. 1920-1950 Description Up for auction is a stunning and complete 13-piece French Majolica asparagus service, featuring 12 individual plates and one large matching serving platter. Crafted by the renowned Salins-les-Bains pottery in Eastern France, this set is a beautiful example of specialized culinary ceramics from the early-to-mid 20th century. In French dining tradition, asparagus was considered a delicacy, and specialized services were designed to present it elegantly. The 12 plates feature a distinct, raised ribbed design intended to cradle the asparagus spears and allow any excess water to drain after cooking. The set is beautifully uniform, covered in a crisp, glossy white glaze that highlights the embossed detailing. The large serving dish (often referred to as a "cradle" or "server") mirrors the ribbed design and is perfectly shaped to hold a large bundle of fresh spears. Maker and Mark: The underside of the plates and the server feature the iconic Salins-les-Bains backstamp: a crowned shield featuring a bell, flanked by laurel wreaths, topped with the word "INALTÉRABLE" (meaning "unalterable" or "unchangeable," highlighting the durability of the glaze), and anchored by the words "SALINS FRANCE". This historic pottery, founded in 1857, was celebrated for its high-quality, durable earthenware. Condition: The set is in excellent vintage condition. There are no major chips, cracks, or repairs visible. The white glaze remains bright and glossy. As is typical with vintage ceramics of this age, there may be minor signs of wear, such as slight crazing or light surface scratches, which are consistent with gentle use and add to its authentic vintage charm. (Please refer to the photographs for a detailed visual assessment). This rare and complete set would make a magnificent addition to any collection of French Majolica, fine dining antiques, or serve as an incredibly elegant statement piece for your next dinner party.
