SALAMPASU MASK – DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO, COLLECTED IN 1954 An anthropomorphic Salampasu mask carved from wood with a dark patina; the elongated face features a prominent forehead, a long, angular nose, and an open mouth lined with pointed teeth. A vertical ochre band highlights the central axis of the face. The headdress consists of a framework made of plant fibers adorned with braided balls, complemented by a spherical element suspended beneath the chin. An old collector’s label indicating it was acquired in 1954. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Salampasu people, mid-20th century. Signs of use, wear, and missing fibers consistent with its age.
