SAINT GIRONS (Baldine). The Margins of the Night: Toward a Different History of Painting. Paris, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, [2006]. Large quarto, publisher’s hardcover with illustrated dust jacket. An important study by Baldine Saint Girons devoted to the representation and conception of night in the history of painting. The author views night not simply as an absence of light but as a specific pictorial space, linked to shadow, dreams, the imagination, and the sublime. The book addresses, in particular, the myths surrounding the origins of painting and the birth of the image from cast shadows, before examining the various ways of “painting the night.” It features a wealth of color illustrations, drawing on the work of numerous masters of Western painting. First edition of this reference work on the aesthetics of night. ISBN 978-2-85917-448-4. Some scuffs and scratches from normal wear on the dust jacket; interior is in good condition.
