All auctions / Lighting / S.T. Dupont - Ligne 1 BS (Briquet Standard) "Grand"...
A0000005370 We are auctioning a pinnacle piece from the golden age of French executive luxury: the large-format S.T. Dupont Ligne 1 BS (Briquet Standard / Modèle Grand) pocket lighter, handcrafted in the Maison’s ateliers in France during the 1970s. This highly prized specimen stands out in the historical catalog for representing the brand’s foundational and most robust design, presented in an imposing large-frame structure entirely crafted with a sumptuous silver bath decorated with the famous, aristocratic, and exquisitely textured geometric pattern known as Grains d’Orge (Barley Grain). A high-jewelry finish that yields an unparalleled tactile experience and a spectacular play of three-dimensional reflections under light. The design of this lighter embodies the ultimate noble solidity of Dupont engineering: its official large-format dimensions (BS) measure precisely 5.8 cm in height, 3.5 cm in width, and 1.4 cm in thickness, offering a truly superb settle, weight, and presence in the hand. On the base, all official authenticity marks are preserved with total clarity and depth: the Maison’s signature in classic typography, the origin 'MADE IN FRANCE', the craftsman’s punch, and its individual serial number hand-engraved at P5JL07. As a singular historical distinction, the top part of the hinge cover bears the caligraphic engraving of the initials CH, matching other exclusive pieces from the same provenance, giving the lot a unique character. Mechanically, the lighter incorporates the legendary first-generation butane gas feeding system, housing the grooved flame-adjustment wheel and the loading door at the base. The piece is presented in an excellent cosmetic and fully functional state, offering a smooth turn of the roller and clean, hermetic, stable combustion. Conservation Status: Collection Quality / Excellent Vintage The aesthetic and mechanical condition of this specimen is magnificent, worthy of a display piece: Structure and Silver Bath: The large-form metal body remains in optimal condition, completely free of structural dents, dings, or significant silver bath loss. The Grains d’Orge relief remains fully sharp, deep, and perfectly defined on all faces, maintaining a formidable mirror-like shine. The top cap opens with complete firmness and preserves its original tension. Mechanical and Engravings: All base engravings and the initials on the cap are perfectly legible under magnification. The grooved roller turns with millimetric smoothness and the gas valve is fully hermetic, free of leaks. Curious Fact for Collectors For appraisers and experts at Catawiki, S.T. Dupont Ligne 1 BS (Briquet Standard) Grand finishes in a silver bath represent one of the most stable and secure vintage investments on the market, considered by mechanics to be the most durable, watertight, and indestructible structure ever manufactured by the brand. The large-format design greatly enhances the Grains d’Orge pattern, which acts as a magnet for daily users by impeccably concealing microfingerprints and everyday wear. The added value of retaining the CH initials from the era engraved on the cap, plus being 100% operational, guarantees intense competition and a truly wild bidding ratio on the international stage. Wishing you the best of luck with your bids and an excellent auction to all Catawiki participants!
