Shadowji – Large canvas work by Rudy Barret ⸻ THE WORK Behind the shōji bathed in an almost solar light, the shadows tell a story that isn’t fully seen. A woman dressed in a red kimono stands out in the twilight. Her face remains at the boundary of the light, while a fan delicately elongates her silhouette. Behind her, the shadows of the branches seem to dance across the Japanese panels. Shadowji is born from the meeting of Shadow, the shade, and Shōji, the traditional translucent Japanese partition. Rudy Barret here plays with what light reveals and what the shadow chooses to keep. The tones of red, black, and orange give the composition an intimate, cinematic atmosphere, blending Japanese tradition with contemporary photography. ⸻ LOT DETAILS Title: Shadowji Artist: Rudy Barret Edition: Limited to 20 copies (1/20) Dimensions: 46 × 66 cm (including a 3 cm white border) Support: Fine Art print on premium canvas Framing: Sold without frame or mount Delivery: Secure shipping in a rigid protective tube Certificate of authenticity: Provided exclusively by email ⸻ ARTIST’S WORD In this work, I wanted the shadows to become almost a character in their own right. The woman is present, but she never fully reveals herself. Her face remains in the shadows, while behind her, the plant silhouettes appear through the shōji under warm light. That’s where the title Shadowji was born, a contraction of Shadow and Shōji. I love the idea that one can recognize a scene immediately, while feeling that there is still something hidden. ⸻ ABOUT THE ARTIST Rudy Barret develops an artistic universe that blends photography, digital composition, and intensive retouching. His works explore light, solitude, nature, travel, and human presence through compositions where realism and imagination meet. His work places strong emphasis on atmospheres, contrasts, and those silent moments capable of leaving room for the viewer’s own interpretation.
