All auctions / Photographs / Ron Galella (American, 1931-2022), Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat

Gelatin silver print, 1984, with Galella's inkstamp and signature to verso, indicating print date of 2002, unframed. Sheet size 8 x 10 in. Ron Galella helped define modern paparazzi photography, capturing unguarded images of figures such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor, and Marlon Brando. Gallela's aggressive pursuit of photographs was often controversial: Onassis successfully sued him to restrict his proximity to her, while Brando broke his jaw following an encounter in 1973. Gallela's photographs are held by major institutions including the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, documenting both celebrity culture and the increasingly complicated relationship between fame, privacy, and the camera. Light wear to the edges of the sheet.
