Roman, Imperial period. A quartet of cast leaded-bronze counterweights, each modeled as a small human bust rising from a rounded, lead-filled body that gave the piece its calibrated heft. The figures are abbreviated yet expressive: bare-shouldered heads with stylized features, one (number three) crowned with a crested helmet that suggests a military divinity or emperor in martial guise. Each terminates above in a short neck or loop by which it once hung from the arm of a steelyard balance (statera), the Roman lever-scale used in markets and workshops to measure goods against a sliding weight. The deep green and brown patina, earthen encrustation, and worn modeling speak to long burial and centuries of practical service. Functional instruments rather than ornaments, they nonetheless carry the period's habit of dignifying the everyday with portraiture. The Roman steelyard, or statera, balanced a load suspended from a short arm against a movable counterweight sliding along a longer, graduated arm. Figural weights of this kind, often filled with lead to reach a precise mass, were typically cast as busts of deities, emperors, or protective figures such as Minerva, Mercury, or Roma. The helmeted example here may represent a martial deity or an idealized imperial portrait, lending an air of authority and honesty to the act of weighing, a quietly political gesture in the commercial life of the provinces.
