ROMAN GLASS INTAGLIO OF MERCURY IN GOLD RING
Ca. AD 200 - 400. An intaglio engraved with Mercury standing in profile, holding a long staff in his left hand. The figure stands on a short groundline. Set in a possibly later gold ring, the oval gem is enclosed by a plain collet above broad rounded shoulders and a substantial semicircular hoop tapering towards the underside. Size: D:21.39mm / US: 12 / UK: X 1/2; Weight: 4g Provenance: UK private collection; London market; ex Oxford collection, 1990s.
