Roman Empire Glass “The Golden Tears of Antiquity” —...

An elegant glass vessel of graceful proportions, distinguished by its unusually long, slender neck, beautifully rounded body and captivating multicoloured surface, displaying an enchanting interplay of golden, amber, turquoise and silvery tones. The Art of Roman Glassmaking Glass vessels were among the remarkable achievements of Roman craftsmanship, combining practical everyday functions with refined artistic beauty. Small bottles with rounded bodies and narrow necks were widely used throughout the Roman world, particularly for storing precious oils, scented preparations, cosmetics and other valuable liquids. Such vessels are commonly known as unguentaria, a term associated with containers for perfumed oils and ointments. The present example displays the characteristic elegance of this tradition, with a generously rounded, pear-shaped body rising into an exceptionally long cylindrical neck and a gently flared rim. The Golden Tears of Antiquity — A Dance of Ancient Colours The most captivating feature of this vessel is its richly varied surface appearance. Under illumination, the glass reveals a fascinating combination of warm honey-gold, amber, soft green, turquoise-blue and delicate silvery reflections. These colours create an almost celestial appearance, reminiscent of sunlight passing through ancient glass. On genuinely excavated ancient glass, iridescence may develop through long-term chemical alteration of the surface during burial, producing delicate layers that reflect light in changing colours. The resulting visual effect can transform an otherwise simple vessel into an extraordinary display of colour and texture. A Vessel of Beauty and Fragrance In the Roman world, perfumes and scented oils were associated with personal grooming, bathing, luxury and social refinement. Small glass bottles were valued for their ability to contain these precious substances while offering an elegant and practical form. The narrow neck of this vessel evokes the careful dispensing of fragrant oils, while its rounded body provides a beautifully balanced silhouette. Although its original contents are unknown, the form invites comparison with the delicate perfume and oil vessels used in Roman daily life. An Elegant Survivor of the Ancient World Measuring approximately 11 cm in height, the vessel possesses an attractive elongated profile. Its gently flared mouth, slender neck and rounded lower body create a harmonious composition, while the richly textured, iridescent-looking surface adds exceptional decorative character. The combination of elegant form and luminous colour makes it an appealing object for collectors of ancient glass, Roman domestic artefacts and classical decorative arts. A delicate expression of ancient elegance — where glass, light and colour unite in a vessel evoking the beauty and refinement of the Roman world.
