According to the previous owner, the object had previously formed part of a private collection in the Netherlands; the date of this earlier ownership is unknown. No further information concerning the earlier ownership history of the object was available from the previous owner. Background Information: This small bronze object represents a stylised herm, a type of image traditionally associated with the Greek god Hermes and his Roman counterpart Mercury. Herms originated as representations consisting of a head above a simplified pillar-like body and were closely connected with boundaries, roads, entrances and places of passage. In Roman religion Mercury was particularly associated with commerce, travellers, communication and prosperity. Monumental herms could mark roads, boundaries, gardens and entrances, while miniature versions translated the same imagery into the personal sphere. Small bronze examples could function as protective objects or amulets. The compact form of this piece, with its strongly simplified human body, belongs to the broader Roman tradition of reducing familiar divine and protective imagery to portable objects for individual use. Protection against misfortune was an important aspect of Roman popular religion. Amulets and other apotropaic objects were worn or carried to avert harmful influences, including the evil eye, and to encourage protection and good fortune. Mercury was particularly appropriate in contexts involving travel and commerce, activities in which uncertainty and risk were unavoidable parts of everyday life. The identification and precise function of individual miniature figures can, however, be difficult to establish without an archaeological find context, and the interpretation as a Mercury herm should therefore be regarded as an attribution. Small bronze objects of this kind were normally cast in moulds and subsequently finished by hand. Their production belonged to an extensive Roman metalworking tradition that supplied personal ornaments, religious objects, fittings and domestic equipment throughout the Empire. Portable religious and protective imagery consequently circulated alongside people, goods and ideas across Roman provincial trade networks. Dating broadly to the Roman Imperial period, this miniature herm reflects the close relationship between religion and everyday experience in Roman society. Rather than being confined to temples and public ceremonies, divine protection could accompany an individual in daily activities, journeys and commercial affairs. This piece therefore forms a tangible connection to the personal beliefs and protective practices of people living within the Roman world."
