About Roger Fritz & Romy Schneider – Paris 1961 A special chapter in Roger Fritz's career is his portraits of actress Romy Schneider, which he photographed in Paris in 1961. The photographs show the then-young Romy Schneider at a crucial moment in her career: the transformation from the “Sissi” image to a serious, international cinema icon. The images are characterized by intimacy and authenticity. Fritz managed to capture Romy Schneider naturally, confidently, and yet vulnerably. Today these iconic Romy Schneider photographs from 1961 are among Roger Fritz's best-known works and are an important documentary record of European film and cultural history. Biografie Roger Fritz (1936–2021) was a German photographer, film director, actor and producer who documented the cultural life of the second half of the 20th century with his striking artist portraits and reportage. For renowned magazines such as Stern, Quick, Vogue, Bunte, Jours de France and die Münchner Illustrierte, he portrayed international personalities from film, art, literature, music and politics in a distinctive visual language. As an actor, director and producer of around 40 films, Roger Fritz himself moved at the center of the European cultural scene. His proximity to figures such as Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Luchino Visconti or Gian Carlo Menotti enabled him to create exceptionally personal and authentic photographs that are today regarded as significant testimonies to culture and film history. Already as a youth, Fritz was repeatedly awarded for his photographic work, including at Photokina (1954 and 1956). After his training at UFA he co-founded the legendary magazine twen, received the German Film Prize in 1967 for Mädchen, Mädchen, and was later honored, among others, with the Lead Award (2007) as well as the German Independence Honorary Award (2011). His photographs and artist portraits are today sought-after collectibles and document the international art and culture scene of the 20th century.
