Robert Collinson (British, 1832-1898) 'The Wandle'

pastel, 47 x 119cm; framed 76 x 147cm, This view looks north across the River Wandle towards All Saints Church, Wandsworth, approximately half a mile upstream from the point at which the Wandle enters the Thames. Although the area has since been substantially altered by urban development, the scene records a stretch of a river once famed as one of England's finest trout streams. Before the growth of industry along its banks in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the Wandle enjoyed a reputation comparable to the great chalk rivers of southern England and was celebrated for its clear waters and excellent fishing.
