Exhibited: Best Productions Showroom, Sacramento, California, 1977 Robert Arthur Goodnough was a prominent second-generation Abstract Expressionist painter associated with the New York School. Born in Cortland, New York, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Syracuse University in 1940 before serving in the U.S. Army during World War II. Following the war, he studied at the Ozenfant School of Fine Arts in New York and under influential Abstract Expressionist painter Hans Hofmann in Provincetown, Massachusetts. He subsequently earned a master's degree from New York University in 1950 and began exhibiting professionally while also contributing articles to ARTnews magazine. Goodnough became an active participant in the emerging New York art scene, exhibiting in the landmark Ninth Street Show in 1951 alongside leading Abstract Expressionists and participating in the New York Painting and Sculpture Annuals from 1953 through 1957. His work was represented by prominent galleries, including Tibor de Nagy and André Emmerich, and he held solo exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1960 and 1961, as well as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in 1969. Throughout his career, he explored Cubist-inspired abstraction, gestural painting, and Color Field techniques, developing a distinctive approach to geometric forms and color. Goodnough received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1965 and exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. In addition to his painting career, he taught at New York University, the Fieldston School, and other institutions. His work is represented in numerous important public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Albright-Knox Art Gallery. He remained an active artist for much of his life and is recognized for his contributions to postwar American abstraction Light toning to the canvas.
