RIEMANN, Bernhard (1826–1866). “Ueber die Anzahl der Primzahlen unter einer gegebenen Grösse”. In: Monatsbericht der Königlichen Preuss. Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Berlin , pp. 671–80. Berlin, 1859. Rare first printing of Riemann’s influential paper on number theory, containing the famed Riemann hypothesis. In this, Riemann’s only published paper on number theory, he formulates the Riemann hypothesis, which, if proved, would give information about the distribution of prime numbers. It was selected in 1900 by David Hilbert as one of the greatest unsolved problems in mathematics, and again in 2000 as one of the Millennium Prize Problems devised by the Clay Mathematics Institute who would award $1,000,000 to anyone who could solve it. As of 2026, the hypothesis remains unproven. Octavo (230 × 145mm). One folding plate (not corresponding to Riemann’s paper), in-text equations and tables (leaves uncut). Original buff wrappers (vertical center fold, light soiling and chipping at edges); black cloth box.
