RESERVE ARMY. Headquarters at Verrès, May 5, Year 8 (May 25, 1800) — ORDER OF THE DAY addressed to Major General THUREAU at SUZE (address) – 2 folio pages: “The Commander-in-Chief is deeply displeased to see that, among the brave men who make up the army, there are some who engage in looting and all manner of excesses, driving the inhabitants to despair. These individuals are unworthy of the name ‘French soldiers’; they compromise national honor and the success of our arms. This disorder must be dealt with immediately... let the generals establish military commissions... and let the guilty parties be shot.... This order is to be read aloud at the head of each company. — General MURAT lost a pistol from the VERSAILLES Arsenal on the road from Arnay to Yorée... General “SOISON” has lost a bay horse… saddled in hussar style.” — P.S. from the Adjutant General — (ink slightly faded, legible)
