René Marie (1890-1973) - Église de Colombey-les-Deux-Eglises

René Marie (1890–1973) - The Church of Colombey-les-Deux-Églises (1963) - Watercolor This superb original watercolor captures with great sensitivity the atmosphere of the famous village of Colombey-les-Deux-Églises (the village where General de Gaulle lived and died). Created in 1963, the work bears witness to the artist's technical mastery, combining the fluidity of watercolor with vivid and expressive contour lines. René Marie here uses a palette of bright and contrasting colors, where the deep blues of the sky and roofs respond to the warm, earthy tones of the facades. A solitary silhouette in the foreground adds a touch of life and perspective to this captivating architectural landscape. Perfectly preserved under glass, this painting captures the very essence of French rural heritage with remarkable freedom of execution. Biography of the artist: René Marie (1890-1973) is a well-rounded French artist, recognized both as a sculptor and a painter. Trained with the greatest, he notably refined his art and sense of volume at the workshop of the famous sculptor Aristide Maillol. While sculpture constitutes a major part of his public recognition, his paper works (inks, washes and watercolor) reveal a temperament of an exceptional colorist. His two-dimensional works, often landscapes or studies of figures, are distinguished by economy of line and a subtle handling of light, sought after by 20th-century art collectors.
