Work 2 Passiones animae — “The Passions of the Soul” It is the Latin version of Les Passions de l’âme, originally published in French in 1649. The treatise studies emotions and the relationship between soul and body, uniting moral philosophy and physiology. Descartes distinguishes six fundamental passions: wonder, love, hatred, desire, joy, and sadness. CARTESIO French philosopher, mathematician and natural philosopher, Descartes was a leading figure in the birth of modern thought. He sought to base knowledge on certain reasoning, starting from doubt and the certainty of the existence of the thinking subject, expressed in the formula “I think, therefore I am.” In mathematics he contributed to the development of analytic geometry, from which the name Cartesian coordinates derives. In physics he studied optics and proposed explanations of natural phenomena based on matter and motion. He lived for a long time in the Netherlands and died in Stockholm. This is a seventeenth-century posthumous edition, interesting for the history of philosophy and science, especially for the illustrations of optics.
