All auctions / Furniture, Design & Mirrors / Relief, Mater Dolorosa - 23.5 cm - Bronze

Originating from the secrecy of an ancient noble estate in central France, this magnificent bronze bas-relief of remarkable quality once adorned the door of a private family oratory, erected at the end of the Second Empire (around 1880). A silent witness to the prayers and devotion of another era, this face of the Virgin Mary expresses an emotion of rare depth. The fineness of the details—from the tear delicately chiselled on the cheek to the harmonious folds of the veil—testifies to the craftsmanship of a master founder of the late 19th century.
