Chrysocolla is a hydrated copper mineral that forms as a product of alteration or oxidation of primary copper deposits. This alteration process occurs in environments rich in copper and oxygen, often associated with oxidation zones of copper minerals such as malachite and azurite. When malachite, which is a copper carbonate, is exposed to hydrated copper solutions and water, chemical reactions can occur that lead to the transformation of malachite into chrysocolla. These hydrated copper solutions can originate from hydrothermal sources or from alteration processes of surrounding copper minerals. During the alteration process, copper ions present in the solution react with the copper carbonate compounds in malachite, causing partial dissolution of the malachite itself. Subsequently, the copper ions combine with hydroxide ions (OH−) present in the solution to form the hydrated copper mineral, namely chrysocolla. Chrysocolla is deposited on the surface of malachite, creating an overlaid layer.
