Iker Casillas is a Spanish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He developed the majority of his career at Real Madrid C. F. and for the Spain national team, being widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in the history of football. He began his playing career at Real Madrid C. F., first in its youth teams and from 1999 to 2015 in the first team, holding the captaincy between 2010 and 2015. He is the second player with the most appearances in the club's history, with a total of 725, behind Raúl González with 741. From 2019 to 2020, due to a myocardial infarction he was part of the FC Porto technical staff, as a precaution during his recovery until his retirement in August 2020. He was full international with the Spain national team from 2000 to 2016, of which he was captain from 2006 to 2016. He is the second Spanish international with the most appearances in history (behind Sergio Ramos with 180) and fifteenth worldwide with 167. He captained his national team, winning the continental championship in 2008 and 2012 and the World Cup in 2010, thus achieving the first "treble" of national teams. He was considered for five years the best goalkeeper in the world by FIFA and UEFA, through his awards in the FIFPro World XI and the UEFA Team of the Year. The IFFHS also chose him for five consecutive years as the best goalkeeper in the world, from 2008 to 2012. Likewise, he was included uninterruptedly between 2007 and 2012 in the final list of Ballon d'Or nominees.
