All auctions / Photographs / Raymond CAUCHETIER (1920–2021), Jules and Jim, François Truffaut.

A silver print, produced in the late 1960s, signed in pencil and numbered 554 (negative number), with ‘Copyright’ and title stamps on the reverse. Dimensions: 7.1 x 9.4 in Raymond Cauchetier recounts: ‘Between takes of the French boxing match in which they face off in the film, Henri Serre and Oskar Werner humorously transformed the ring into a musette dance hall. On the right, the abandoned boxing glove seemed to me to play its part in this temporary ceasefire, and I framed the shot accordingly.” Far more than just a dance scene, this photograph embodies one of the most eloquent symbols of Franco-German reconciliation portrayed in Jules and Jim. Between takes of the French boxing match, Oskar Werner and Henri Serre stepped out of their roles to perform, with disarming mischief, a Belle Époque waltz in the centre of the ring, which was transformed for a moment into a dance floor. In the foreground, an abandoned boxing glove serves as the silent counterpoint to this moment of light-heartedness. Raymond Cauchetier, who regarded this photograph as his favourite, chose to include it in his frame, making this object a symbol of a truce. Through this spontaneous gesture, the photographer captures the very spirit of the film: friendship, brotherhood and the possibility of a peace restored.
