All auctions / Photographs / Raymond CAUCHETIER (1920–2021), *À bout de souffle*, Jean-Luc Godard.

A silver gelatin print produced in 2013 from the negative on high-quality baryta paper, mounted onto an aluminium plate and framed. On two labels on the reverse: signed in pencil, titled, with copyright stamps. Dimensions: 19.7 x 23.6 in Produced in 2013 for the ‘Raymond Cauchetier’ exhibition at the Salon de la Photo, each print was produced under the supervision of Raymond Cauchetier and is of a quality suitable for collectors. Printer: Thomas Consani, then at the Central Dupon Image laboratory (now a printer at the Picto laboratory). Amidst the passers-by, Godard is filming the scene of Jean-Paul Belmondo’s death, as seen by Jean Seberg, on Rue Campagne Première. Belmondo is absent. Yet this peaceful scene represents the film’s most dramatic moment. Jean Seberg is supposed to be looking at Jean-Paul Belmondo, dying at her feet. Jean-Paul Belmondo is elsewhere, but his presence is symbolised by a clapperboard casually placed at Jean-Luc Godard’s feet. The cameraman is sitting comfortably on a chair lent to him by the owner of the neighbouring café. “What’s that supposed to mean, you filthy bastard?”
