RAY-JONES (Tony) — ENGLISH LEISURE RAY-JONES (Tony). English Leisure. 120 photographs by Tony Ray-Jones. Foreword by Ainsley Ellis. Paris, Éditions du Chêne, [1974]. Large oblong quarto, gray cloth-bound hardcover, title on spine, lavishly illustrated with 120 black-and-white photographs. FRENCH EDITION OF TONY RAY-JONES’ ICONIC BOOK ON BRITISH LEISURE AND CUSTOMS. Photographs taken primarily in the late 1960s at English seaside resorts and recreational spots: Brighton, Blackpool, Margate, Bognor Regis, etc. Ray-Jones developed a style of street photography that is both documentary in nature and full of humor, which would go on to exert a significant influence on subsequent British photography. The French edition published by Le Chêne dates from 1974 and consists of approximately 130 pages. A copy of this same edition is currently being marketed as the first French edition. Condition: generally good; the hardcover is slightly faded and shows some signs of wear.
