Diopside is a mineral belonging to the inosilicate group (from the Greek "Inos" meaning fiber), more precisely part of the Pyroxenes. Diopside typically forms within ultramafic igneous rocks such as kimberlite and peridotite. A mineral-rich variant of this mineral is also common in mafic rocks, including olivine basalt and andesite. Moreover, Diopside appears in various metamorphic rocks, particularly skarns formed from silica-rich dolomites through contact metamorphism.
