Ralf Altrieth - Pays des merveilles - XXL

Through acrylic, decals and matter transfers, Ralf Altrieth conjures a world whose rules seem to belong only to him. The bold colors and layers of material give the surface great richness. Black lines structure the forms while touches, traces and transfers reveal different strata of paint. The overall piece preserves a direct spontaneity, but also a real sense of rhythm and composition. Between free figuration, instinctive drawing and graphic poetry, the work does not aim to tell a precise story. It opens a space where the imagination can circulate freely. Through its energy, its colors and its distinctly singular character, the work brings an immediate presence to the space. It first attracts with its expressiveness, then holds the eye with the multitude of details that gradually reveal themselves. From the crucible of improvisation he brings forth a world intact, made of spontaneous joys and strong impulses." — Dr Friedhelm Häring, art historian and museum director "His gesture-and-color writing describes a world open to new voices and experiments never attempted. His canvases and works on paper demonstrate that painting remains a major expression on the contemporary scene." — Laurent Puech, art historian and curator MARGINS: The indicated dimensions correspond to the work mounted on a stretcher.
