Red cuts. 1 blank leaf, [18], 499, 1 blank leaf Raphael Johann Steidele (1737–1823) was a prominent figure in the Viennese medical school. In the text he introduced precise scientific recommendations: for example, he advised against using the birth chair for fetuses in footling presentation, preferring the transverse bed, and warned about the risks associated with the umbilical cord. By imperial decree, midwives of the era were legally obliged to possess and consult this manual during their practical work to ensure safer births and reduce neonatal and maternal mortality. Beautiful figurative vignette on the frontispiece. Gothic type. Double ex libris applied to the flyleaf. Copper-engraved plates, full-size, clean, and all 27 present. Restorations at the upper corner of the first 5 leaves. Gores mostly faded, running along the volume. An exemplar in more than decent condition, complete and usable.
