ow available at auction from Second Vintage This Rado Green Horse presents a sought-after configuration for collectors, featuring the over-engineered 41-jewel automatic movement. Distinguished by an exceptionally clean silver sunburst dial, crisp applied faceted indices, and a distinctive red date display, this 1960s timepiece perfectly balances robust mechanics with sharp mid-century design. Brand: Rado Model: Green Horse Reference Number: 11657 Serial Number: 343842 Movement: Automatic, Caliber AS 1700/01, 41 Jewels Dial: Silver sunburst with applied faceted indices and red date display Case Size: 35 mm (excluding the crown) Case Material: Stainless steel Production Year: 1960s Condition: Excellent vintage condition. Timegrapher: +9+12s/day, performing remarkably well. Dial and Hands The exceptionally well-preserved silver sunburst dial remains remarkably vibrant and clean. It features applied faceted indices and the signature applied Rado anchor logo, beautifully set against a purple background. The printed text, including the Green Horse emblem, is crisp and fully intact. A date window at the 3 o'clock position adds a striking touch of contrast with its red numerals. The dauphine-style hands maintain their original appearance with mild age-related patina, showing light oxidation and minor spotting visible under close inspection. The sweep seconds hand displays minor aging that complements the honest character of the watch. Case and Crystal The stainless steel case is in honest vintage condition, retaining a polished finish with light surface scratches consistent with age and normal wear. The lugs retain good shape and definition, flowing neatly into the smooth steel bezel, which exhibits matching light surface wear. The caseback is a particular highlight, retaining clear and deep engravings, including the patent numbers, that remain entirely legible. A knurled crown, clearly signed with the Rado 'R' logo, sits at the 3 o'clock position. The domed acrylic crystal is clear, with no major scratches or crazing, providing a distortion-free view of the dial. Movement Inside beats the modified A. Schild (AS) 1700/01 automatic movement, distinguished as the 41-jewel variant. The automatic winding mechanism is equipped with a signed rotor bearing the clear engraving "RADO GREEN HORSE FORTYONE 41 JEWELS SWISS (MS)". The movement appears generally clean, with the caliber marking clearly visible beneath the balance wheel and only minor surface marks present on the rotor. Timegrapher: +9+12s/day. Exhibiting remarkable accuracy and consistency, performing brilliantly for a vintage timepiece. Strap The watch is fitted with an attractive modern black leather strap featuring an alligator grain pattern and white contrast stitching. The strap appears to be in near-new condition. Condition Excellent vintage condition. The dial is exceptionally clean and well-preserved, while the case and bezel show light, honest surface scratches consistent with normal wear. The hands display mild, age-appropriate oxidation and minor spotting. The caseback engravings remain deep and clear. Dimensions 35 mm (excluding the crown) Remarks This Green Horse is a sought-after 41-jewel variant, prized for its complex, high-jewel movement. With its remarkably clean silver sunburst dial, striking red date display, and clear caseback engravings, this is a thoroughly attractive example of one of Rado's most successful mid-century designs. History Rado introduced the Green Horse collection in the late 1950s, establishing it as a major line of automatic watches for the brand. A defining characteristic of these models is the rotating anchor logo found on the dial, which was originally designed to mimic the swinging motion of the automatic winding rotor. Produced during the 1960s, this reference 11657 is powered by a modified A. Schild (AS) 1700/1 automatic movement. The 41-jewel versions of the Rado Horse series are notably less common than their lower-jewel counterparts, making them a collector favourite for their impressive, over-engineered mechanics.
