All auctions / Silver & Gold / R. Scheltens - Coffee spoon (12) - 19th-century silver...
12x Antique 1st quality silver Apostle spoons, unique complete set, coming in a suitable case (J.R. Jedeloo, The Hague). Length of spoons 9 cm. Net silver weight 104 grams. Case dimensions 25.3 cm x 13.5 cm. Total weight including case 446 grams. Silver hallmarks: The 18th-century master mark VB from Deventer is the mark of silversmith Willem Brandenburg (in historical sources also referred to as W. Brandenburg or initiated as WB/VB, since the letters 'V' and 'W' or 'V' and 'B' in old punches sometimes overlapped or could be read as 'V' due to engraving methods). He was active as master silversmith in Deventer from 1742 to 1797. City hallmark: The Deventer Eagle (the German imperial eagle, since Deventer was a historic imperial city). However the spoons are also hallmarked with RS2 (where the S has become illegible due to wear), which is the official master mark of R. Scheltens from Groningen (active late 19th century). He was known for making high-quality Apostle spoons with pseudo hallmarks of 18th-century smiths to meet the great historical demand. These Apostle spoons do not originate from the 18th century, but they are a very fine, high-quality 19th-century replica set and thus have historical value. 1 spoon bears only the RS2 hallmark. The spoons are in good condition. The case shows signs of wear on the outside; otherwise it is fine. Carefully and securely packed. Registered/insured shipping. Fast dispatch, but pickup is also possible.
