Quartz on Pyrite - Huanzala Mine Peru Quartz on Pyrite...

Quartz on Pyrite - Huanzala Mine Peru — This specimen comes from the Huanzala mine, in the Huallanca region, one of the most iconic sulfide deposits in the world. For over half a century, Huanzala has been famous for producing pyrites among the most perfect ever extracted: cubes, pentagonal dodecahedra and complex aggregates that seem shaped by a higher geometry. This piece is an emblematic example: a true crystalline architecture. The surface is richly populated by polished pyrite crystals, clear, with sharp edges, that reflect light with a metallic sheen almost liquid. The faces show the typical fine striation of Huanzala pyrite, evidence of the rhythmic growth of the crystals within hydrothermal cavities. Beside the larger crystals stand groups of micro-cubes, dense as a mineral mosaic: a secondary crystallization that speaks of a fluid environment in continuous evolution. Intertwined with the pyrite is an elegant druse of transparent quartz, developed in long transparent prisms, slender and pure. The combination of the two minerals is not casual: quartz and pyrite form in deep hydrothermal sequences, under conditions of high temperature and pressure, when fluids rich in sulfur, iron and silica circulate through fractures and cavities of the Andean basement.
