Her paintings depict Antara, a significant ceremonial landscape associated with the maku (witchetty grub) creation story. Drawing on a lifetime of cultural knowledge, she translates the rhythms of Country into a distinctive visual language that is both deeply personal and firmly grounded in tradition. "I paint the Antara storyline," Puna explains, "the landscape we live within, home to the important witchetty grub ceremony. In my paintings you can see the witchetty grubs, the paths they travel, the big rocks and the rockholes that are part of this ceremony... I like to use a lot of water and inks on my paintings. This is my way." Working with fluid washes of blue, indigo and white, Puna allows pigment to move freely across the surface, creating compositions that evoke the movement and atmosphere of Country rather than describing it literally. Rockholes, significant sites and the pathways of the maku emerge through layered passages of colour, giving her paintings a remarkable sense of depth and vitality. While the imagery reflects the physical landscape of Antara, its deeper cultural meanings remain with those entrusted to hold and pass on this knowledge. © PUNA YANIMA / Copyright Agency, 2026
