KENNEDY, John F. (1917–1963). Profiles in Courage . New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956. Inscribed first edition with original dust-jacket. During a long convalescence from spinal surgery, Kennedy, at this time a senator for Massachusetts, began collecting biographies of politicians who stood out for championing risky or unpopular causes. The collection's working title was Courage in the Senate , but it was published as Profiles in Courage . The book rapidly became a best-seller for which Kennedy was awarded the Pulitzer Prize. Octavo (upper corners slightly bumped). Publisher’s quarter black cloth and blue linen, spine lettered in gold (upper corner slightly bumped); original dust-jacket in blue, red and black (top edge of upper panel torn, smaller tears in lower edge of upper panel and head and tail of backstrip, cracks at folds, light stains).
