Preserved Echinus Esculentus Urchin Test Echinoderm...

Echinus Esculentus: A Natural Masterpiece of Cornwall — This exceptional specimen of Echinus esculentus, also known as the common sea urchin, presents a magnificent illustration of the biological complexity and structural perfection of echinoids. Hailing from the coastal waters of Cornwall, a locality renowned for the grandeur and vitality of its populations of this species, the specimen stands out for its remarkable size and impeccable preservation. The 'test', or calcareous shell, of this Echinus esculentus exhibits a highly symmetric globose morphology typical of the class Echinoidea. The surface is adorned with a series of fine, densely distributed tubercles, arranged in an intricate pattern that follows the five radial zones, called ambulacral zones. These structures served as the base for the spines and the ambulacral podia, essential for the organism’s movement and feeding. The interambulacral plates are well defined, highlighting the growth and fusion of the individual skeletal units. A particularly interesting aspect is the natural coloration of the test. The specimen showcases a vivid red-orange coloration that alternates with lighter bands, almost scarlet, creating a striking and visually appealing color contrast. These color bands are arranged radially, accentuating the fivefold symmetry of the urchin and providing an indication of its intricate growth bands. The stability and intensity of these colors attest to the excellent preservation of the piece, which has not undergone artificial alterations. The size of this specimen significantly surpasses the average for the species, making it a museum-quality piece of notable value. The structural integrity is complete, with no significant fractures or abrasions, which is rare for a non-fossilized sea urchin test of such dimensions. Even the oral and aboral openings are intact and well defined, allowing for a detailed analysis of their morphology. This specimen is not only a magnificent decorative object but also a valuable educational and research tool for marine biology and paleontology scholars. Its origin from Cornwall, combined with its dimensional rarity and the beauty of its coloration, makes it a museum-worthy piece, ideal for enriching any natural history collection. The care taken in its preparation and conservation ensures its beauty and integrity for years to come, representing a lasting investment for the discerning collector.
