Collection of 20 original postal pieces from the period of the Second Anglo-Boer War, mainly from 1901. The collection includes correspondence to and from Boer prisoners of war, including items addressed to the Diyatalawa POW Camp in Ceylon and Broad Bottom Camp on St. Helena. Several envelopes bear clear military censorship stamps, including “DIYATALAWA CAMP / PASSED / CENSOR”, triangular “PASSED / PRESS / CENSOR” stamps, and pink seal strips with “OPENED UNDER MARTIAL LAW”. Both V.R. and E.R. censorship slits are present, which makes this group interesting as transitional material from the Victoria / Edward VII era. Additionally there are items with Natal franking, transit and arrival stamps from Colombo, St. Helena, and Cape Town, among others. Various envelopes mention “Prisoner of War”, hut or tent numbers, and names of prisoners of war. Historically interesting and coherent group of military postal history from the Anglo-Boer War. The pieces show signs of age, tears, opened edges, missing parts, and damage to some censorship strips. View the photos carefully for your own impression of the condition.
