Political Dial Featuring William’s Magic Helmet GALTIMAN. — POLITICAL DIAL FEATURING WILLIAM’S MAGIC HELMET. Paris, M. L. Mauger, Capart & Cie, publishers, 103 rue Montmartre; Printed by Giely, circa 1870–1871. A spectacular colored lithograph designed as a circular dial with twelve hour markers. In the center, the head of William I emerges from the sea, topped by a spiked helmet serving as the hour hand. Around the dial are various political events and allusions from the Franco-Prussian War. Caption: “To set the dial, simply rotate William’s helmet around its axis. ” A rare political caricature with a playful tone, likely originally designed as a mechanical picture. Colored lithograph. Vertical tear in the upper portion extending to the black background, some wear and minor foxing.
