Polished Ammonite Fossil with Honey-Hued Aragonite...

The crystallizations of aragonite are fascinating — This magnificent specimen is a polished cross-section of a fossil ammonite of the genus Cleoniceras, a piece of natural history from the rich Madagascar deposits. Dating to the Early Cretaceous, about 110 million years ago, this fossil has been expertly cut and polished to reveal the extraordinary beauty hidden inside. The mirror-like polish highlights the warm amber and brown hues of the fossilized shell, creating a play of colors and transparencies that catches the light. The smooth, glossy surface is pleasant to the touch and allows appreciation of every single detail of this prehistoric marvel, transforming it into a visually striking object. One of the most fascinating features of this specimen are the sutural lines, visible as intricate fern-like or lace-like patterns on the surface. These lines, unique to each individual like a fingerprint, mark the contact point between the inner walls (septa) that divided the shell’s chambers and the outer shell wall. Their complexity is indicative of the animal’s evolutionary maturity. Inside, the chambers that once served to buoy the cephalopod were filled over millions of years with aragonite crystallizations. This mineralization process has created a breathtaking internal landscape, with cavities lined by crystals varying from cream to honey, adding depth and exceptional mineralogical value to the fossil. Hailing from the famous quarries of the Mahajanga region in Madagascar, this fossil is not only a testament to the marine life of the past but also a unique piece of Earth's history. The combination of perfect preservation of the form and the beauty of the internal mineralizations makes every Cleoniceras specimen an irreplaceable collectible. Beyond its undeniable scientific and collecting value, this ammonite is a true object of natural art. Its dimensions and aesthetics make it perfect for display in a wunderkammer, on a desk, or as a high-quality decorative element in any setting, carrying with it the allure of a lost world."
