Ruby-red glass, freely shaped with bubble-knots • Chalet Artistic Glass (attrib.) • 1962–1975 A large free-form ruby-red glass bowl, heavy and freely molded, with six extended points and resting on pinched knuckles with an embedded air bubble. Attributed to Chalet Artistic Glass in Cornwall, Ontario, the factory of Venetian glassblowers that worked in Canada from 1962 to 1975. With a 34 cm span and nearly 2.5 kg, a substantial example. In brief: Material: ruby-red glass, uniformly colored, freely formed Dimensions: h 11.5 x w 34 x d 31 cm Weight: 2490 g Brand: no signature or label found Dating: 1962–1975, Chalet’s production period Provenance: private collection, Western Europe Description and context: Asymmetric body from which six unequal points flare: two long horizontal, two upright, and two short. Freely formed and drawn with tools, without molds. The base bears six mass-pulled knuckles; in three of them a large air bubble is trapped, and it is those three that carry the bowl. The base window is plane-cut and polished to a neat disk. This combination of uniformly colored selenium-red, bubble-knots, and a large cut base window is the construction method of the Canadian factories run by Mantuan/Muraine emigrants. Chalet called this form a stretch: two horizontal and two vertical pulls. The factory is attributed, not signed. Condition: Good. In the photos there are no chips, rim damage, or hairline cracks visible. The slight asymmetry between the points is inherent to free-form glass and not a defect. The cut base window shows fine signs of use. The embedded air bubbles in the knuckles are production-related. No restoration evident upon daylight inspection. See the photos. Offered as a decorative object, not intended for use with food. In interior: A dramatic statement in a mid-century modern, maximalist, or eclectic interior, on a sideboard, coffee table, or windowsill. When light passes through, the points glow to a fiery ruby. Shipping: Professionally packed in a sturdy box with cushioning material, and for delicate objects a double box. Always insured with Track and Trace. See feedback from previous buyers. Attribution and sources: Attributed to Chalet Artistic Glass, Cornwall, Ontario, on the basis of construction method. The large flat cut base window, the pinched knuckles with air bubble, and the uniformly colored red are consistent with signed Chalet pieces. This same model is not documented with a signature, hence no bare name. Bohemian and Murano alternatives are excluded by construction method.
