Pirelli - Jerrycan - Polypropylene - 1958 Arch. Roberto Menghi

Pirelli - Jerrycan - Polypropylene - 1958 Arch. Roberto Menghi

Rare Pirelli 5-liter fuel can. Year 1958. Designed by architect Roberto Menghi. It won numerous awards at the time and was exhibited at the MoMA in New York. Produced in Italy at the Pirelli plant in Monza. Measures about 25 cm in length, about 9 cm in width, and about 26 cm in height. The nozzle is extendable by about 12 cm. Weight: 730 grams. Shows superficial signs of use. The plastic (polyethylene) texture is perfect and pleasant to the touch; it isn’t sticky as it can be after nearly 70 years since production. The cord tied to the cap at the neck is detached. The gasket is slightly degraded, but filling the can with water and turning it upside down only a thin trickle of water comes out. At the time it was called a 'basket' for gasoline, and Menghi achieved the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics. Shipping insured in a rigid cardboard box.
