DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK We offer at auction a large-format sanguigna of superior quality by Pietro Annigoni, an Italian artist of international stature, universally regarded as one of the greatest masters of 20th-century figurative painting. In this fascinating "Studio di carattere", the artist explores the expression and psychological intensity of the subject with his celebrated and incomparable drawing ability. The masterful use of sanguigna returns volume, light and shadow with vibrant realism, drawing from the great Italian Renaissance tradition and reinterpreting it with profound modern sensitivity. To further adorn this extraordinary work is the historic link it shares with our venue: our Gallery has collaborated directly with the Master, organizing three of his solo exhibitions (in 1973, 1981 and 1987). This direct and lasting collaboration is a guarantee of an impeccable historical record, making the lot particularly sought after by the most discerning collectors. In particular, the dedication ad personam next to the Master’s signature demonstrates that this sanguigna is dedicated to Giulia and Giovanni Vaiani, founders of the Galleria d'Arte Piero Della Francesca, a gallery where Annigoni exhibited in a solo show in 1974 (this sanguigna was left on that occasion). BIOGRAPHICAL AND CRITICAL NOTES ON THE ARTIST Pietro Annigoni (Milan, 1910 – Florence, 1988) was an Italian painter, fresco painter, engraver and medalist, celebrated worldwide for his extraordinary technical skill and firm defense of the great figurative tradition. Trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, in 1947 he, along with Gregorio Sciltian and the Bueno brothers, was among the signatories of the "Manifesto dei Pittori Moderni della Realtà", openly opposing the trends of abstraction and informal art to vindicate the importance of technical rigor, drawing and realism. Blessed with drawing talent on a par with Renaissance masters, his fame quickly spread beyond Italy. Annigoni is universally known as "the painter of queens": among his most famous portraits are Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, Princess Margaret, John F. Kennedy, Pope John XXIII and the Indian spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba. His portrait of the British sovereign (1956) remains one of the most iconic and reproduced images of the twentieth century. Alongside royal and high-society portraiture, Annigoni always maintained a deeply humanitarian vein, portraying the marginalized, wanderers, and still lifes, and he stood out for large cycles of frescoes (including those for Montecassino Monastery and for the Basilica of Saint Anthony in Padua). His works are today housed in the world's most important museums, including the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the National Portrait Gallery in London and the Vatican Museums, confirming him as a colossal figure of the 20th century.
