Pietersite Pendant / cabochon / new- 7.16 g - (1)

Pietersite pendant / cabochon / new Set in 925 sterling silver Includes leather cord (80 cm) Weight: 7.16 g / 35.8 ct (weighed without leather cord) 32.2 mm x 13.5 mm x 7.7 mm New and unworn Pietersite is the trade name for a breccia-like mixture of hawk's eye and tiger's eye in dark blue-gray to brown-yellow color and thus by definition a mineral. Discovered Pietersite in 1962 by Sidney "Sid" Pieters in Southwest Africa (now Namibia), and it is named after him. The exact locality is given as Hopewell Farm, about 40 km northeast of the town of Outjo in the Kunene region. The only other known locality (as of 2017) is Nanyang in Henan Province, China, where Pietersite was discovered in 1993. Pietersite is used exclusively as a gemstone and is offered in cabochon or table-cut and processed into decorative items. According to other sources, Pietersite is described as a variety of chalcedony with fibrous inclusions of amphibole minerals. Hawk's eye and tiger's eye, however, are microcrystalline varieties of quartz, so they contain the same base substance, and the croydolite- or hornblende-fibers embedded in tiger's eye and hawk's eye belong to the amphibole group.
