Provenance: From a private collection; The Holy Virgins and Martyrs series Your print belongs to a famous series of prints dedicated to the Holy Virgins ("Holy Virgins"), conceived by Pieter de Jode I in collaboration with the publisher Jan van Mechelen around 1626. This series includes prints of identical format and iconographic layout for several sacred figures. You can observe the strong stylistic similarity with other engravings in the same collection. Pieter de Jode the Elder (Pieter de Jode I, 1570–1634) represents the technical and editorial apex of the Flemish De Jode dynasty in Antwerp. His style, inherited from Mannerism and enriched by the Baroque, is faithfully reflected in the preparatory drawing ("figuravit") executed for your print. Jan van Mechelen (also known as Johannes van Mechelen, active from the late 16th to the early 17th century) was an important Flemish art publisher, dealer and engraver based in Antwerp, the European printing capital of the era. Jan or Joannes Cnobbaert (1590–1637) was a Flemish printer, publisher and bookseller active in Antwerp at the beginning of the 17th century.
