Pieter de Bailliu (I) (1613-1660)

Original engraving by Pieter de Balliu, taken from a drawing by Abraham van Diepenbeeck, depicting Christ crowned with thorns and derided by soldiers and published in Antwerp between 1630 and 1645. Example trimmed to the framing, on laid paper, in decent state of preservation, slightly darkened by time, with the lower left corner restored with loss of the engraver's name and, partially, of the model, visible creases and yellowish stains on the verso (see photo). Beneath the image, in the left corner [Abraham a Diepen]beke inuenit/[Petrus Balliu s]culpsit", then a one-line Latin inscription from the Gospel of Matthew "Plectentes...dextera eius. Matth. 27" Christ with hands bound seated in the center in a classical building, several Roman soldiers place the crown of thorns on his head and deride him, other soldiers look to the left. Hollstein (Dutch & Flemish), 11.
